Video Gallery - Mountbattens and Gandhi 1948

These are two videos from the Imperial War Museum in London procured by Dr Rajeev Menon, a great grandson of Raja Kerala Varma, who was the Mahraja of Cochin in 1948.

The first clip gives us a glimpse of British Raj with  its pomp and circumstance during a State visit. The first Governor General of India, Lord Mountbatten is received by dignitories of the then Cochin State.  The Senior Princes represented the Maharaja who was in ill health.  They were Parikshith Thampuran, Munsif Ravi Varma Thampuran and Kerala Varma Kelappan Thampuran.  Since the Raja was indisposed, Lord Mountbatten paid a visit to the Hill Palace.  The videp clip shows His Highness in conversation with The Governor General.

The second clip is more poignant.  When Gandhiji's ashes were brought to Ernakulam, the Maharaja paid a visit to prostrate  himself before the sacred remains of The Mahatma.

It is remarkable that the British documented these events and archived them for posterity.
